CAPOEIRA

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that represents a mix of game, dance, music, acrobatics, aerobic, self-defence and fight. Capoeira is one of the most popular sports in Brazil and is protected by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. Originally from the 17th century, Capoeira was created by slaves brought to Brazil from Africa. As they had to find a way to protect themselves, escape and become free, but they were not allowed to fight, they used dance and music to disguise the fact they were actually practicing their fighting skills. The main music instrument used is berimbau and it shows the style of Capoeira you will play. Other instruments used in Capoeira are caxixi, atabaque, pandeiro, agogo and reco reco. The main movement in Capoeira is called ginga, which can be translated to swing. With Capoeira you learn to sing, move, play instruments and fight. It is all in one and therefore is highly recommended for children’s development. By having a unique and peculiar praxis, merged with historical and socio-cultural heritage, Capoeira improves motor coordination, reduces stress, contributes to greater flexibility, balance, rhythm, develops self-confidence, and promotes respect to others. Capoeira is a group activity, practised in teams, which helps children to socialise. When you play Capoeira your whole body moves. Capoeira is sport and art! LET’S GINGAR!
